Magstim – Medical Device Business

“We brought John Gordon of Project Technologies in immediately after the Company was acquired by US Private Equity backers when it became apparent that product development (in an organisation which had seen itself as a something of a “research” institution for 25 years) was in a bit of a mess. He gave an immediate assessment which proved very accurate, and then set about trying to fix it. That required bringing in new skills and also introducing better methods and processes. Along the way, he pointed out that preparations for transfer to a new building were off track and IT systems needed upgrading. I asked him to tackle those as well which he did successfully. In effect, he became COO for the site and operated in that guise for about six months, before we had the Nanny McPhee moment when we realised that we had now got the capacity to do it ourselves. A permanent MD was appointed from within the business and his team now includes two of the new people John had brought in as contractors. Sencon,  Interim Assignment Product Development/ Portfolio Management

“During a busy time for our business at Sencon, in a challenging economic market place, a key member of our management team became unavailable to the business for approximately a year due to personal issues. We needed an interim consultant to manage our product development team of approximately 10 in house personnel and additional subcontractors to enable us to continue the roll out of new product developments and the maintenance and enhancement of our existing product range.
We turned to Project Technologies for a solution and our consultant John Gordon. John quickly identified the large range of projects underway and helped to rationalise and prioritise the key projects against business/ customer need. Working with myself and the sales team this work provided a requirement/ budgeted cost against market return defined for each project in the portfolio against which we could focus our team and develop plans for an aggressive new product delivery target. This also allowed us to resolve an outstanding backlog of change and upgrade issues required on current products in the field.
Project Technologies were not afraid to address the difficult questions that allowed this rationalisation during an important time for the business and to suggest alternative approaches to the challenges in hand. John brought an improved project management methodology and order to the projects with which he was engaged, worked closely with our engineering team to produce good results. This has been continued in the business.
John’s input and team leadership helped us to maintain good progress, complete key projects and achieve good business results in that and subsequent years.  He worked closely with our returning development manager to ensure a smooth hand over at the end of the interim assignment.
